Frequently Asked Questions

Are sessions virtual or in person?

The majority of sessions offered are virtual. Virtual sessions offer couples the ability to engage in sessions together or separately. In addition, virtual sessions are perfect for couples with busy schedules who would like to have a session during a quick lunch break at work or for those who don’t want to worry about travel time (or Miami traffic!).

In person sessions are available upon request for local couples. The office is located in central Coral Gables. However, there are additional session costs for in office sessions. Please reach out if you would like to schedule a session in the office.

How long do sessions last and how many sessions should we do?

Each session is 45-50 minutes. Typically 6-8 premarital counseling sessions are recommended. For Marriage Counseling, I would suggest expecting 8-12 sessions. However, the duration of couples counseling can vary significantly depending on each couple and presenting goals and issues.

When should we start premarital counseling?

Most couples enjoy scheduling weekly or biweekly sessions. Therefore, on average the duration of premarital counseling can range from around 1.5 months to 3 months. The decision on how long to begin prior to marriage is more of a personal preference, depending on your scheduling needs.

How much does premarital counseling cost?

Rates vary by day/time due to demand. Please see rates for an estimate.

Do you accept insurance or have sliding scale?

At this time, Marital Mindset Counseling is self-pay only. I also can offer a superbill to clients who have out-of-network benefits with their insurance provider. Depending on your coverage, you may receive partial reimbursement from your sessions.

Depending on availability, I may have slots open for clients who qualify for a reduced rate. Please contact me for more information. In addition, stay tuned for more low-cost resources and options for couples, including workbooks and courses.

Can we receive a discount on our marriage license by attending premarital counseling?

Florida couples have the option to receive $25 off their marriage license after attending at least 4 hours or premarital education. Please reach out for more information on how to receive a certificate of completion that would qualify for the discount.

Do you offer weekend or evening sessions?

Yes. Saturday sessions are available on select weekends. However, availability for these days/times are limited and reflect higher rates due to demand. Please see rates to learn more.

We’ve never attended counseling before. What should we expect?

Starting counseling or therapy for the first time can feel very vulnerable. I understand there is a lot of uncertainty in terms of what will be discussed or how you will feel sharing personal details with a “stranger.” My goal is to make couples feel as welcome, accepted and comfortable as possible. I enjoy collaborating with clients to ensure I’m meeting them where they are. I also recognize the importance of getting out of your comfort zone in order to grow. We will gradually push the boundaries to ensure you’re getting the most out of counseling possible.

Much of the work we do at Marital Mindset Counseling is very goal-oriented, but we will also pay special attention to your history, past experiences and patterns to help you understand more about yourselves and each other.

What topics will we cover?

There are common topics that are often relevant for couples preparing for marriage or for couples already married. However, sessions are tailored to your specific needs and relationship.

  • Communication & Compromise

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Personality Differences

  • Roles & Responsibilities

  • Relationships with In-Laws and Extended Family

  • Generational Patterns to Continue/Discontinue in your own Marriage

  • Sex & Intimacy

  • Finances

  • Spirituality

Can we attend sessions after we are married?

Yes! Your relationship will continue to evolve and grow over time. I welcome couples to return for relationship “check-ups.” Consider me a pillar of support in your marriage that you can return to anytime you need to reconnect, get unstuck, or make adjustments. What does it mean that you are a Marriage and Family Therapist Registered Intern?

I am currently licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist Registered Intern in the state of Florida. This means I hold a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, with a specialization in couples therapy. It also means I have completed over 350 hours of supervised clinical experience with a variety of client ages, presenting problems, and diagnoses. To become a fully licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, this requires an additional two years of postgraduate clinical experience and 1,500 additional client hours.

As I work with you, I am in the process of completing those postgraduate hours, which designates me as a Registered Intern. I engage in regular supervision with Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Dr. Elizabeth Mahaney, where she offers additional guidance and support to ensure I’m offering my clients the most effective and comprehensive treatment possible.
